Building Poli Chapter Eight: She's Suddenly Obese
I shouldn't be surprised. After all, they say people tend to gain weight after some time in a relationship.
Luckily, Poli's new dimension is quite fitting for her. She has put on extra volume in just the right places, and I must say that I am quite pleased with the result. The first impression is good, and the ride is comfortable, both climbing and bombing down hill. There is, in other words, no reason as of yet to send her on a diet. However, she has grown out of her mudguard.
I mentioned quite early (I think) in the building process that I would like to equip my steel lady with plus-size tires at some stage. Since the initial rides on the bike, I have found a hardtail to be quite rough on rocky descents, and I hoped beefier tires would give me some cushioning.
It's a bit early to conclude after one ride, but I felt less all over the place with the new tires. As a surprising side effect, she climbs like a mountain goat on a sugar rush - fast and sweet.
The only downturn is that she has grown out of her mudguard, but I suspect we will be a couple for a while, so I will give her a new one as a token of our special relationship.
For the occasion, I also needed new wheels, 27.5 with boost at the back. The rims are Easton Arc 40, the widest I could find. It has been custom built with a Hope Pro Evo 4 hub at the back and a Syntace hub that I had in my basement at the front. The spokes are DT Swiss Comp.
